Review: Turnstile “Glow On”

Hay veces que una “etiqueta musical concreta” se queda corta y hasta obsoleta a la hora de hablar de un grupo en cuestión.. Ahí están los casos de Refused y At The Drive In para el hardcore, System Of A Down y Deftones para el Nu Metal o The Mars Volta para…bueno ellos es que son únicos en sí mismos.

A día de hoy creer que Turnstile es simplemente una banda de hardcore muy buena si, pero una banda de hardcore más…es caer en lo infantil y lo iluso, estos chicos hace tiempo que están más allá de cualquier etiqueta y sólo deberíamos referirnos a ellos como una de las mejores bandas que ha dado esta década y con mucha diferencia respecto a otros compañeros de profesión y estilo musical.

Con su nuevo disco había un “hype” enorme ya que no sabíamos si iban a poder superar a su brillante disco anterior (“Time & Space”, ndr.), pero una vez escuchado el disco en profundidad la respuesta no sólo es un sí rotundo sino que además la banda ha creado uno de los mejores…y quién sabe si el mejor disco del 2021.

Uno puede creer que esté exagerando pero sólo escuchar la mezcla de estilos que hay dentro del disco y lo bien ejecutado que está, me hace insistir con firmeza en lo escrito más arriba.

En estas 15 piezas podemos encontrar desde “Alien Love Call” o “Lonley Dezires”, temas que pese a contar con la producción de Blood Orange (Carly Rae Jepsen,Tinashe o FKA Twigs) son experimentos muy bien resueltos, siendo la primera una especie de medio tiempo intenso por el cual Thrice matarían mientras que la segunda muestra su lado más musculoso y con cierto aroma punk rock oscuro y melódico a la vez, siendo una pieza sencillamente exquisita y que podrían disfrutar los amantes de bandas como Creeper o Alkaline Trio pero también al que le gusten Joy Division.

Incluso pese al miedo e incertidumbre inicial al escuchar “Don’t Play”, esa mezcla infernal y adictiva habitual con toques de !Salsa! es prácticamente increíble y podría ser una pieza perdida tanto de The Mars Volta como de Jane’s Addiction y a nadie le sorprendería y lo mejor es que suena totalmente natural y creíble.

Mientras que la new wave se hace presente a su manera en temas como “New Heart Design” y de nuevo el experimento les acaba saliendo bien y aporta otro color más al disco que lo hace aún más atractivo para el oyente.

Turnstile han demostrado con este disco que la palabra evolución la entienden mejor que casi nadie y que haciendo un disco personal y no ajustándose a los postulados del hardcore para quedar bien con sus primeros seguidores, han salido ganadores y puede que no guste a los puristas y trues del estilo, pero ellos se están perdiendo uno de los mejores discos de toda la década y por mucho.

Sólo hay que ver como conviven a la perfección temas con arreglos electrónicos como “Fly Again” con temas mucho más alternativos como “Holiday” e incluso sus coqueteos simpáticos con el R’n’B y el pop en temas tan cortos como adictivos siendo “Endless” o “T.L.C” (Turnstile Love Connection) acaban por conquistar el corazón y el oído del oyente.

No es por comprar ya que estamos en otra era y el ambiente musical de la industria no es ni por asomo lo que era hace 15 años atrás pero quizás de haber salido en los primeros compases del 00′ Turnstile tendrían en sus manos lo que “Deloused In Cromatorium” y “The Shape Of Punk To Come” significaron para The Mars Volta y Refused respectivamente, pero estamos en 2021 y los señores de Turnstile se han vuelto a comer al 95% de su escena con su nuevo disco y diría que hasta dicha escena hace dos discos y medio que se les queda corta.

Sea como sea ni se os ocurra dejar escapar uno de los discos del año , del cual con cada escucha ganas más y aprendes algún secreto nuevo dentro del mismo.

There are times when a “specific musical label” falls short and even obsolete when it comes to talking about a group in question. With their new album there was a huge “hype” since we did not know if they would be able to surpass their brilliant previous album (“Time & Space”, ed.), But once the album was listened to in depth, the answer is not only yes. resounding but also the band has created one of the best … and who knows if the best album of 2021.

One can believe that I am exaggerating but just listening to the mix of styles that is inside the album and how well executed it is, makes me firmly insist on what is written above.

In these 15 pieces we can find from “Alien Love Call” or “Lonley Dezires”, songs that despite having the production of Blood Orange (Carly Rae Jepsen, Tinashe or FKA Twigs) are very well resolved experiments, the first being a kind intense halftime for which Thrice would kill while the second shows his more muscular side and with a certain dark and melodic punk rock aroma at the same time, being a simply exquisite piece that lovers of bands like Creeper or Alkaline Trio could enjoy but also who like Joy Division.

Even despite the initial fear and uncertainty when listening to “Don’t Play”, that usual hellish and addictive mix with hints of! Salsa! It is practically incredible and could be a lost piece of both The Mars Volta and Jane’s Addiction and nobody would be surprised and the best part is that it sounds totally natural and believable.

While the new wave is present in its own way in songs like “New Heart Design” and again the experiment ends up working out well and brings yet another color to the album that makes it even more attractive to the listener.

Turnstile have shown with this album that the word evolution is understood better than almost anyone and that by making a personal album and not adjusting to the postulates of hardcore to look good with their first followers, they have come out winners and purists and purists may not like it. trues of style, but they are missing one of the best albums of the entire decade and by far.

You just have to see how songs with electronic arrangements like “Fly Again” coexist perfectly with much more alternative themes like “Holiday” and even their sympathetic flirtations with R’n’B and pop in songs as short as addictive being ” Endless “or” TLC “(Turnstile Love Connection) end up conquering the listener’s heart and ear.
