“For They Know Not What They Do” es uno de los grandes temas que conforman “Judas”.
Tampoco se quedan atrás “The Heartbeat of the Devil” o “And it Was Night”, y es que las melodías que salen del teclado suenan totalmente ochenteras.

German Dark Metal visionaries Lord of The Lost return with their seventh studio album, “Judas”, on sale since July 2, 2021 via Napalm Records. A double album, divided into two conceptual parts, “Damnation” and “Salvation”, with 24 songs in total, detailing the perception of the character of Judas Iscariot and the so-called Gospel of Judas.
Almost two hours of music and biblical history were not enough for these Germans, since as is usual in them, they could not miss their extensive special editions. The most striking, a strictly limited deluxe box that includes a printed aluminum cover, the double CD of “Judas” in Mediabook, the special CD, “The Sorrows Of The Young”, the additional double CD LOTL +, as well as the Bonus DVD of the six-part documentary, “Becoming Judas“. “The Sorrows Of The Young” features ten previously unreleased songs, written by Chris Harms at the age of 18, which have now been re-recorded, while LOTL + features 32 completely different interpretations in terms of vocals and lyrics from the original song “Viva Vendetta” written and performed by artists such as Megaherz, Equilibrium, Lacrimosa, Subway To Sally, Nachtblut, Unzucht and many more.
Obviously, I will not expand on all the editions, but I will highlight the best, in my opinion, of that main double album that focuses on “Judas”. We begin with the first CD, “Damnation”, and the first song, “Priest”, begins with a spectacular, epic, cinematic intro, accompanied by the peculiar and dimensional voice of Chris Harms, synthesizers, industrial elements and punctual doses of melody, and that, surely, it will become one of the great hymns of those of Hamburg.
“For They Know Not What They Do” is one of the great songs that make up “Judas”. Epic, gothic, symphonic, capable of combining aggressive with melodic moments and a memorable chorus.
“Your Star Has Led You Astray” and “Born With a Broken Heart” are full of melancholy and rage, managing to maintain the balance between the harsh voices, the choruses, the distorted sound of the guitars and a dark atmosphere very characteristic of the style of the Germans.
“In the Field of Blood” is a halftime that sounds like a classic gothic metal, dominated by the piano and another memorable chorus. The same line follows “2000 Years a Pyre”, which reminds me of Type O Negative and which has one of the best guitar solos on the entire album.
“Death Is Just a Kiss Away” bases its melodies on the piano, on a stringed instrument like the cello, on the powerful voice of Chris Harms and on the choirs, as well as on the sound of an organ that brings an ecclesiastical and more suitable for the occasion.
And to finalize the review of the first CD, “Damnation”, we end with “The Heart Is a Traitor” which opts more for industrial and electronic metal, as well as the instrumental “Be Still And Know”, this being one of the ones I like the most for its rhythmic base and the powerful guitars it has.
We are going with the second CD, “Salvation”, and the song that opens, “My Gospel of Judas” is another one of those songs that will be an authentic hymn, metal, hard and ideal to enjoy live. It is followed by “Viva Vendetta”, with a powerful and dark rhythmic base, hypnotic keyboard lines and a Chris Harms in multifunction mode, dominating several vocal registers.
“Argent” shows us the angelic songs of a female voice that serve as the starting point for one of the most gothic and addictive songs on the entire album. Nor are “The Heartbeat of the Devil” or “And it Was Night” far behind, as the melodies that come off the keyboard sound totally eighties.
“Iskarioth” is an easily recognizable song for all who know the German quintet. Changes of rhythm, intense melodies, epic choruses, dark and aggressive parts are some of the most distinctive facets of Lord of The Lost.
To finish, I can name some more melancholic and slow songs, such as “My Constellation” or “A World where We Belong”, which despite what was written above do not lose that intensity or that epicity that reigns throughout the album.
In short, this is Lord of The Lost’s best work to date, despite the fact that, in my opinion, he has several songs left over (14 or 15 would have been enough) and, sometimes, with this type of disc conceptual listening is a bit tedious, at least in my case, but in the end it turns out that “Judas” has many incentives that manage to trap you in its universe of gothic, dark, industrial, epic and symphonic metal, such as a pristine production, an astonishing epic and catchy, powerful and dark melodies.
