Reseña – Review: The Smashing Pumpkins “Cyr”

Lo confieso, hace años que les perdí la pista a The Smashing Pumpkins. Llevo años y años sin escuchar sus discos. Siempre me han gustado a pesar de no ser una fan enfervorecida, creo que tienen grandes canciones y discos e incluso tuve la oportunidad de verles en directo hace mil años y me encantaron. Pero nada más. A pesar de ello, es un grupo que me gusta, aunque esté bastante lejos del estilo que suelo oír.

Esta vez ha llegado a mis manos “Cyr”, su nuevo disco, un álbum compuesto por 20 temas (sí, veinte), y del que seguramente vais a escuchar opiniones encontradas.

Porque atrás quedaron aquellos “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” o Aquel “Siamese Dream” repletos de temas ya considerados como clásicos y aquel rock alternativo que enganchó a toda una generación. 

Esta vez, con “Cyr”, Billy Corgan y los suyos nos traen un disco esencialmente pop. Y además, doble.

Esto no quiere decir que sea un mal disco. Simplemente es distinto. No esperéis temas cañeros ni guitarreo, sino tranquilidad.

 A mí, personalmente, me ha gustado. Me ha parecido un buen disco, dejando de lado lo que podría esperarse de las calabazas. Abrid la mente, escuchadlo como si fuese un grupo desconocido, y es muy probable que lo degustéis con placer.

“Cyr” tiene un toque ochentero muy palpable, unas melodías tranquilas y calmantes sin llegar a ser somníferas. 

Imaginad que a Ghost le quitamos la parte “metal”. Algo parecido. Hace unos meses me recomendaron el nuevo disco de  The Weeknd porque sonaba a los 80. Y me gustó. Pues os juro que (llamadme loca) noto cierta similitud. Sí, tengo una pequeña fijación con los 80.

Evidentemente no voy a diseccionar la veintena de temas que componen el disco. En conclusión, os diré que “Cyr” es un doble álbum serio y elegante, que seguramente envejecerá muy bien. Es entretenido, escuchable y relajante. Un disco perfecto para estar en casa leyendo o estudiando, para ir en el coche y no enfadarse en los atascos, un disco, en definitiva, que tendrá sus fieles y sus detractores, pero un buen disco al fin y al cabo.

I confess, years ago I lost track of the Smashing Pumpkins. I have not listened to their records for years and years. I have always liked them despite not being an avid fan, I think they have great songs and records and I even had the opportunity to see them live a thousand years ago and I loved them. But nothing more. Despite this, it is a band that I like, although it is quite far from the style I usually hear.

This time, “Cyr”, his new album, has come into my hands, an album composed of 20 songs (yes, twenty), and of which you will surely hear conflicting opinions.

Because that “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” or that “Siamese Dream” were left behind, full of songs already considered classics and that alternative rock that hooked a whole generation.

This time, with “Cyr”, Billy Corgan and his crew bring us an essentially pop album. And also, double.

This does not mean that it is a bad album. It is just different. Do not expect rock tracks or a lot of guitars, but tranquility.

 I personally liked it. It seemed like a good album to me, leaving aside what could be expected of the pumpkins. Open your mind, listen to it as if it were an unknown group, and it is very likely that you will taste it with pleasure.

“Cyr” has a very palpable eighties touch, calm and calming melodies without being sleepy.

Imagine that we remove the “metal” part from Ghost. Something like that. A few months ago someone recommended the new The Weeknd album to me because it sounded like the 80s. And I liked it. Well I swear that (call me crazy) I notice a certain similarity. Yes, I have a little fixation on the 80s.

Obviously I’m not going to dissect the twenty songs that make up the album. In conclusion, I will tell you that “Cyr” is a serious and elegant double album, which will surely age very well. It is entertaining, listenable, and relaxing. A perfect album to be at home reading or studying, to go in the car and not get angry in traffic jams, an album, in short, that will have its lovers and its detractors, but a good album after all.
