Reseña – review: The Pretty Reckless “Death By Rock And Roll”

La pérdida de Chris Cornell (Soundgarden / Audioslave), supuso un momento trágico para millones de seguidores del músico y ambas bandas, amén de su familia y allegados.

Pero hay una persona a quien esta pérdida le afectó de un modo muy especial y notorio, esa no es otra que Taylor Momsen, la cantante y líder de The Pretty Reckless, estuvo muy cercana a Soundgarden (primero como fan desde pequeña y luego cuando le tocó compartir la última gira de la banda antes de la pérdida de Chris) en los últimos días de Chris y cuando se confirmó su fallecimiento, su mundo se derrumbó, no en vano 2 días antes habían compartido el último show de la gira con la mítica banda de Seattle, en donde también estuvieron presentes The Dillinger Escape Plan y lo que menos esperaba sería el terrible suceso que marcaría su vida personal y profesional.

Tras esto, la banda realizó un par de shows más pero se despidieron de los escenarios y tras 4 años de silencio, muchos dudaban si TPR volverían a grabar nueva música, pero Taylor ha demostrado una fuerza interior enorme y ha vuelto con el cuarto álbum de estudio de The Pretty Reckless este mes de febrero de 2021.

El disco se abre con el tema que da nombre al disco y en donde ya podemos ver que la banda no ha perdido ni un ápice de fuerza y recupera quizás ese tono más directo que tenían en “Going To Hell” y de hecho este primer corte bien podría haber encajado en aquel trabajo y a nadie le sorprendería. Desafiante y con las pilas cargadas Taylor Momsen ha vuelto para quedarse y esta es la mejor apertura que podían haber elegido para su nuevo disco.

En “Death By Rock And Roll”, la banda continúa con la senda que les ha caracterizado y eso se nota en los primeros acordes muy Zeppellianos de “Only Love Can Save Bow” que se ven eclipsados por la voz tan sensual e intensa de Momsen, ese tono rockero le queda tan bien a la cantante y se nota más claridad que en el disco anterior, es sin duda un muy buen comienzo. Destacamos la participación de Matt Cameron y Kim Tayhill de Soundgarden quienes igual que Chris siempre creyeron en el talento y la capacidad artística de Taylor y The Pretty Reckless.

Primera sorpresa y es que en la canción “And So It Went” la banda ha contado con la colaboración de Tom Morello (RATM y Soundgarden) lo cual enriquece mucho más su sonido.

Pero menuda sorpresa nos espera en “My Bones”, un tema mucho más intenso y agresivo, tranquilos que no han hecho un corte de death metal pero si que las voces son mucho más rudas que en el tema anterior y puedes notar como se desgarra el alma de Taylor en cada palabra que escupe frente al micrófono.

Inquietante y con aroma a whiskey de algún bar de la Gran Manzana, nos regalan “Witches Burn”, en donde Momsen hace una exhibición de sus cuerdas vocales tanto en los agudos como en el tono más melódico y sensual que bien podría sonar en cualquier burdel rockero que se precie. Además la canción se adorna con un pequeño pero muy certero solo de guitarra que seguro queda de muerte en directo.

Mucho mejor es “25” , un corte muy oscuro y con una atmósfera grunge revoloteando a lo largo de la canción, el tratado vocal de Taylor es impresionante en esta canción poniendo los pelos de punta desde el primer segundo en que empieza a cantar y noqueándote en el estribillo, sin duda podría ser una de las mejores canciones de The Pretty Reckless hasta la fecha y no estaría exagerando.

Bajamos un poquito las revoluciones en “Got So High”, con unas influencias de gente como Joe Strummer o Neil Young, pero que quizás no alcance el nivel de grandes baladas como “You”, aunque se perfila como uno de los “singles” del disco y ese toque de los 90 es realmente exquisito, como juntando dos décadas en una (los padres de la cantante deberían estar orgullosos de como la chica ha sabido cuajar ambos mundos en su grupo musical).

Otros temas que destacan podrían ser la rockera “Turning Gold”, que empieza más lenta para ir creciendo y explotar en el estribillo, la preciosa “Rock And Roll Heaven” (quizás la balada del disco pero lejos de otras piezas como “House On A Hill”) o la curiosa “Hayley Darling” con una influencia muy Neil Young que sorprenderá a propios y extraños.

Parecía que no, pero la banda vuelve a resurgir prácticamente de sus cenizas y demostrar porqué son una de las mejores bandas de rock alternativo de esta década y tienen en Taylor Momsen a una de las voces más personales del estilo, que por suerte vamos a poder disfrutar por muchos años más y este es sólo el comienzo, bienvenidos de vuelta chicos.

The album opens with the theme that gives its name to the album and where we can already see that the band has not lost an iota of strength and recovers perhaps that more direct tone that they had in “Going To Hell” and in fact this first cut He might as well have fitted the job and no one would be surprised. Challenging and with charged batteries Taylor Momsen is back to stay and this is the best opening they could have chosen for her new album.

In “Death By Rock And Roll”, the band continues with the path that has characterized them and this can be seen in the first very Zeppellian chords of “Only Love Can Save Bow” that are overshadowed by Momsen’s sensual and intense voice. , That rocker tone suits the singer so well and it shows more clarity than in the previous album, it is without a doubt a very good beginning. We highlight the participation of Matt Cameron and Kim Tayhill from Soundgarden who, like Chris, always believed in the talent and artistic ability of Taylor and The Pretty Reckless.

The first surprise is that in the song “And So It Went” the band has had the collaboration of Tom Morello (RATM and Soundgarden) which enriches its sound much more.

But what a surprise awaits us in “My Bones”, a much more intense and aggressive song, calm that they have not made a death metal cut but the voices are much more rude than in the previous song and you can notice how the song is torn Taylor’s soul in every word she spits into the microphone.

Disturbing and with the scent of whiskey from a bar in the Big Apple, they give us “Witches Burn”, where Momsen makes an exhibition of his vocal chords both in the treble and in the most melodic and sensual tone that could well sound in any brothel rocker worth his salt. In addition, the song is adorned with a small but very accurate guitar solo that is sure to die live.

Much better is “25”, a very dark cut and with a grunge atmosphere fluttering throughout the song, Taylor’s vocal treatise is impressive in this song, making your hair stand on end from the first second he starts singing and knocking you out. on the chorus, it could certainly be one of The Pretty Reckless’ best songs to date and I wouldn’t be exaggerating.

We lowered the revolutions a little on “Got So High”, with influences from people like Joe Strummer or Neil Young, but perhaps not reaching the level of great ballads like “You”, although it is emerging as one of the “singles” of the disco and that touch of the 90s is really exquisite, like joining two decades into one (the singer’s parents should be proud of how the girl has managed to curdle both worlds in her musical group).

It seemed not, but the band practically resurfaces from its ashes and shows why they are one of the best alternative rock bands of this decade and have in Taylor Momsen one of the most personal voices of the style, which luckily we will be able to enjoy for many more years and this is just the beginning, welcome back guys.
