Reseña – review: Sumo Cyco “Iniciation”

Si hay un grupo que aporta frescura a su escena, esos son sin duda los canadienses Sumo Cyco quienes tras casi 4 años sin material nuevo, vuelven a la carga con su tercer disco de estudio para demostrar que su explosiva a la par que fresca combinación de punk, alternative, nu metal, pop alternativo e incluso sonidos cercanos al reggae sigue teniendo mucha guerra que dar todavía.

El disco arrancan con “I Love You Wrong”, un corte bastante cañero y enérgico en donde como es habitual la voz de Skye brilla por encima de todo y por algo no tiene rival en la escena alternativa, uno escucha una canción donde ella cante y te guste más o menos sabrás identificar su característica voz y por algo se la llama la “Gwen Stefani” del metal moderno, porque los registros más melódicos recuerdan a los de la icónica vocalista de No Doubt.

Aunque este corte presenta ciertos coqueteos con el djent y es sin duda un buen comienzo para este nuevo trabajo.

Aunque para ser justos mucho mejor es la siguiente canción que no es otra más que el single “Bystender” con el que se ha dado el pistoletazo de salida al nuevo disco y lo cierto es que es un cañonazo impresionante con un ritmo frenético y súper pegadizo con un estribillo brutal en donde Skye nos vuelve a demostrar la infinidad de recursos vocales que tiene. La canción es un cóctel infernal de ritmos que van y vienen pudiéndose percibir ciertos guiños a bandas como Skindred y Hed P.E. pero con el suficiente gancho para captar a cierto tipo de público que aún no se ha acercado a la colorida propuesta de la banda canadiense.

Temas como “Vertigo”, la alocada “Bad News” o “No Surrender” son pruebas de que la banda no hace un tema igual a otro en ninguno de sus discos pero esto no quita para que todos tengan algo para destacar y enriquecer al nuevo disco, destacando por supuesto la voz de Skye que se adueña de todas las canciones y en cada una aporta un lado distinto de su personalidad como cantante.

Quizás la sorpresa tras esta seguidilla de canciones es la peculiar “M.I.A” (no, tranquilos que no es un cover de la épica canción de Avenged Sevenfold del mismo nombre incluida en City Of Evil”), y digo peculiar porque no exagero si digo que suena como si Billie Eilish deciese tirar por derroteros más alternativos y rockeros en un disco suyo, además ese aroma medio reggae hace de esta pieza una de las más curiosas a la vez que atractivas dentro del disco y suena como un cruce imposible entre No Doubt , Skindred y Billie Eilish por muy extraño que esto os pueda resultar.

En este disco una vez más podemos ver como Sumo Cyco no han caído en ningún estilo en concreto y quizás por eso destaquen tanto y puedan tocar con grupos tan diferentes y gustar a todo tipo de público, no tienen el toque nu metal de bandas como Nonpoint o Hed P.E aunque algo de este estilo tengan incorporado a su música , tampoco son tan cañeros como Jinjer o Butcher Babies pero el metal es identificable en muchas de sus canciones y pese a haber girado con bandas como Bowling For Soup, no se les puede considerar una banda de pop punk y sin embargo algún guiño a este estilo también hay… Por tanto hablamos de una de las bandas más frescas y originales de los últimos tiempos que sin pertenecer a ninguna escena concreta pueden encajar en todas y eso es algo que dice mucho en favor de Sumo Cyco.

La banda ha demostrado en este disco que pese a un tiempo un poquito excesivo de espera, han vuelto por todo lo alto quizás con el mejor disco de su carrera y si bién quizás necesites alguna escucha de más para hacerte con su propuesta, en cuanto lo hagas caerás rendido ante una de las bandas más en forma dentro de la escena alternativa, no os los perdais porque este 2021 promete ser su año y si no…al tiempo.

The album starts with “I Love You Wrong”, a quite powerful and energetic cut where, as usual, Skye’s voice shines above everything and for something she has no rival in the alternative scene, one listens to a song where she sings and you like it more or less you will know how to identify her characteristic voice and for something she is called the “Gwen Stefani” of modern metal, because the most melodic registers are reminiscent of those of the iconic vocalist of No Doubt.

Although this cut presents certain flirtations with the djent and is without a doubt a good start for this new work.

Although to be fair much better is the following song that is none other than the single “Bystender” with which the new album has been kicked off and the truth is that it is an impressive cannon shot with a frenetic and super catchy rhythm with a brutal chorus where Skye once again shows us the infinity of vocal resources she has.
The song is an infernal cocktail of rhythms that come and go, with certain nods to bands like Skindred and Hed P.E. but with enough hook to capture a certain type of public that has not yet approached the colorful proposal of the Canadian band.

Songs like “Vertigo”, the crazy “Bad News” or “No Surrender” are proof that the band does not make a theme the same as another in any of their albums but this does not mean that everyone has something to highlight and enrich the new one. disc, highlighting of course the voice of Skye that takes over all the songs and in each one brings a different side of her personality as a singer.

Perhaps the surprise behind this string of songs is the peculiar “MIA” (no, don’t worry, it’s not a cover of the epic Avenged Sevenfold song of the same name included in City Of Evil “), and I say peculiar because I am not exaggerating if I say that It sounds as if Billie Eilish decided to go for more alternative and rocker paths in one of his albums, also that half reggae aroma makes this piece one of the most curious as well as attractive within the album and it sounds like an impossible cross between No Doubt, Skindred and Billie Eilish as strange as this may be to you.

In this album once again we can see how Sumo Cyco have not fallen into any specific style and perhaps that is why they stand out so much and can play with such different groups and appeal to all kinds of public, they do not have the nu metal touch of bands like Nonpoint or Hed PE, although they have something of this style incorporated into their music, they are not as strong as Jinjer or Butcher Babies but metal is identifiable in many of their songs and despite having toured with bands like Bowling For Soup, they cannot be considered a pop punk band and yet some nod to this style there is also … Therefore we are talking about one of the freshest and most original bands of recent times that without belonging to any specific scene can fit into all of them and that is something that says a lot in favor of Sumo Cyco.

The band has shown in this album that despite a little excessive time of waiting, they have come back in style perhaps with the best album of their career and if you may need some more listening to get hold of their proposal, as soon as possible. Do you will fall asleep before one of the fittest bands in the alternative scene, do not miss them because this 2021 promises to be their year and if not … at the time.
