Reseña – review: King Company “Trapped”

El esperado último trabajo, “Trapped”, de la banda finlandesa de hard rock melódico King Company, y tercero en su haber con la incorporación de un nuevo vocalista, Ilkka Keskitalo (Lost Kingdom, The Black Nail), ha visto la luz recientemente bajo el sello AOR Heaven, otra novedad y un cambio de discográfica que les ha venido muy bien a los de Helsinki después de un flojo segundo disco, “Queen of Hearts” (2018), que no terminó de cuajar, al menos, en mi opinión.

El resto de la formación sigue siendo la misma que debutó con “One For The Road” (2016): Mirka ”Leka” Rantanen (Raskasta Joulua, Warmen, ex-Thunderstone, ex-Kotipelto, ex-Hevisaurus, etc.), fundador y batería, Antti Wirman (Warmen, Children Of Bodom) a la guitarra, Jari Pailamo (Daimonic, ex-Kiuas, ex-Twilight Guardians), teclados y Time Schleifer (Enfarce) al bajo.

“Trapped” ha sido producido por la propia banda y mezclado/masterizado por Jesse Vainio (Sarah Brightman, Apocalyptica, Edu Falashi, Sunrise Avenue, Gregorian, etc.)

El disco comienza con “I Will Be Here”. Un temazo de hard rock con un ritmo muy potente, constante y pegadizo de bajo, batería y guitarra, dejando la parte más melódica al teclado, y la voz de Ilkka sorprende por su registro versátil e incluso calcado al de Pasi Rantanen (cantante del primer disco de King Company y fundador de Thunderstone).

El siguiente tema, “Trapped in Heart”, llega a ser algo más tranquilo pero mantiene ese ritmo contundente del principio, destacando el riff/solo de guitarra y el teclado (más presente y melódico).

“Stephanie” se inicia con el teclado como protagonista en un tema que tiene un aire a Whitesnake y que se desarrolla como un medio tiempo épico, melódico y directo. Atentos al gran solo de guitarra de Wirman.

“Dangerous Tonight” me recuerda a otro grupo escandinavo como son los suecos Eclipse. De esos temas bailables o marchosos con un estribillo para corear en directo y con un duelo entre guitarra y teclado apasionante.

“Death of Soul” es otro tema para los directos, sobre todo por su gran estribillo, aunque sea un medio tiempo melódico, pero también melancólico, es aquí donde la voz de Ilkka luce más profunda.

Llegados al ecuador del disco, “Screen Is Your Life” suena un tanto metalera y algo oscura, con riffs machacones y profundos, batería trepidante y otro duelo entre guitarra y teclado más que interesante.

“Nothing for Free” es un medio tiempo melódico e intenso que tiene cositas de los míticos Europe, y otro estribillo marca de la casa ideal para los directos.

Más hard rock melódico tenemos en “Fair Winds”. Este tema me recuerda a los británicos FM. Ese sonido de teclado y esas pausas que hacen con cambios de ritmo más intensos son pruebas delatoras.

“Cold Killing Game” suena potente y heavy, por sus riffs y solos poderosos. En cambio, el teclado presenta un sonido distinto (algo tétrico y profundo), cosa que no desentona con el resto y que combina muy bien con la voz de Ilkka.

“Nobody’s Fool” cambia un poquito de aires, se traslada a un terreno amplio, moderno y algo oscuro, con varios matices pero sin olvidar su hard rock característico, presentando una batería rápida y unos solos de guitarras y teclado vertiginosos.

Se cierra el disco con “Stars Will Lead the Way”, y podríamos decir que es la típica balada por su comienzo lento y suave, pero resulta que hay algo más, es una maravilla de canción, épica, con grandes solos y que va cobrando fuerza hasta que se termina de apagar en los segundos finales.

Conclusión, “Trapped” es uno de los discos de hard rock melódico del año, te atrapa, nunca mejor dicho, por sus melodías, por su potente dinamismo, por su efectiva producción y por su elegante y poderosa voz, la de Ilkka Keskitalo, un cantante que me ha sorprendido gratamente y que le viene como anillo al dedo a King Company, certificando su mejor disco hasta la fecha.

The long-awaited last album, “Trapped”, by the Finnish melodic hard rock band King Company, and third under their belt with the addition of a new vocalist, Ilkka Keskitalo (Lost Kingdom, The Black Nail), has recently seen the light under the AOR Heaven label, another novelty and a label change that has come in handy for those from Helsinki after a weak second album, “Queen of Hearts” (2018), which did not finish curdling, at least in my opinion.

“Trapped” has been produced by the band themselves and mixed / mastered by Jesse Vainio (Sarah Brightman, Apocalyptica, Edu Falashi, Sunrise Avenue, Gregorian, etc.)

The album begins with “I Will Be Here”. A hard rock song with a very powerful, constant and catchy rhythm of bass, drums and guitar, leaving the most melodic part to the keyboard, and Ilkka’s voice surprises with its versatile register and even traced to that of Pasi Rantanen (singer of the first King Company record and founder of Thunderstone).

The next song, “Trapped in Heart”, becomes somewhat calmer but maintains that forceful rhythm from the beginning, highlighting the riff / guitar solo and the keyboard (more present and melodic).

“Stephanie” begins with the keyboard as the protagonist in a song that has a whitesnake air and that unfolds as an epic, melodic and direct halftime. Watch out for Wirman’s great guitar solo.

“Dangerous Tonight” reminds me of another Scandinavian group like the Swedes Eclipse. One of those danceable or party songs with a chorus to sing live and with a passionate duel between guitar and keyboard.

“Death of Soul” is another theme for live performances, especially because of its great chorus, although it is a melodic halftime, but also melancholic, this is where Ilkka’s voice looks deeper.

At halfway through the album, “Screen Is Your Life” sounds a bit metal and a bit dark, with crushing and deep riffs, frenetic drums and another duel between guitar and keyboard more than interesting.

“Nothing for Free” is a melodic and intense halftime that has little things from the mythical Europe, and another house brand chorus ideal for live performances.

More melodic hard rock we have on “Fair Winds”. This theme reminds me of British FM. That keyboard sound and those pauses they make with more intense rhythm changes are telltale evidence.

“Cold Killing Game” sounds powerful and heavy, due to its powerful riffs and solos. On the other hand, the keyboard presents a different sound (somewhat gloomy and deep), something that does not clash with the rest and that combines very well with Ilkka’s voice.

“Nobody’s Fool” changes a bit of air, moves to a wide, modern and somewhat dark terrain, with various nuances but without forgetting its characteristic hard rock, presenting fast drums and dizzying guitar and keyboard solos.

The album closes with “Stars Will Lead the Way”, and we could say that it is the typical ballad for its slow and smooth beginning, but it turns out that there is something else, it is a marvel of song, epic, with great solos and that is gaining strength until which finishes shutting down in the final seconds.

Conclusion, “Trapped” is one of the melodic hard rock albums of the year, it catches you, never better said, for its melodies, for its powerful dynamism, for its effective production and for its elegant and powerful voice, that of Ilkka Keskitalo, a singer who has pleasantly surprised me and who suits the King Company like a glove, certifying his best album to date.
