Reseña – Review: Iced Earth “Iced Earth 30th Anniversary”

El legendario debut homónimo de los gigantes del Heavy Metal Iced Earth cumple 30 años. El próximo 18 de diciembre, y de la mano de Century Media Records, regresa en una nueva remezcla y remasterización de alta calidad cortesía del productor estadounidense Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Crowbar, Demons & Wizards, Overkill, Queensrÿche, etc.), que también trabajó con el grupo en su último álbum, “Incorruptible”.

“Iced Earth 30th Anniversary” estará disponible en CD digipak edición limitada, álbum digital y, para los más fanáticos, en vinilo de 180 gramos, con la posibilidad de adquirirlo en 5 diferentes colores (en negro clásico, verde oscuro, naranja neón, azul cielo y rojo sangre), además de una nueva portada rediseñada de la original europea. Una auténtica pasada que hará las delicias de cualquier coleccionista.

Posiblemente, “Iced Earth” sea uno de los discos más reeditados o remasterizados de los últimos años, yo tengo en mi poder el primero del año 2002, después hubo varios más, quizás demasiados, aunque deduzco, aniversarios y publicidad aparte, que lo que se pretendía era mejorar el sonido original, estamos hablando de 1990 y para nada la producción fue mala, pero sí mejorable.

La primera vez que escuché este disco me dejó alucinado, y a día de hoy me sigue pasando lo mismo. Me quedada de piedra cuando pasaban de momentos tranquilos, algunos de ellos oscuros y pesados, otros con pasajes acústicos y leves teclados, a cambios de ritmos inesperados, complejos, melódicos, rápidos, galopantes, entre thrash y power, y es que pocos grupos había, por aquel entonces, que mezclaran tales ingredientes de esa manera tan ingeniosa.

Un disco redondo donde los haya, ocho temazos, incluido el interludio acústico “Solitude”, y al cual mejor. Me resulta complicado destacar alguno cuando todos son destacables, quizás la épica “When The Night Falls”, una maravilla de nueve minutos que te da la impresión de que dura muchísimo menos.

Además de lo dicho anteriormente, todos ellos tienen una base rítmica bien definida, una gran variedad de riffs y solos incisivos y técnicos, algo que propició un sello característico al grupo, aquí hay que puntualizar la excelente labor de Randy Shawver, guitarrista infravalorado, en mi opinión, también puede ser porque quién se llevaba la mayoría de galardones era Jon Schaffer, líder, fundador, guitarra rítmica y único miembro que queda en la actualidad, y lo único que no me convencía del todo es su cantante, Gene Adam (Purgatory), de hecho Schaffer le pidió que tomara lecciones de canto y Adam se negó, así que para el segundo disco, “Night of the Stormrider”, fue reemplazado por John Greely.

Personalmente, hubiera preferido una regrabación con la formación actual, o con Matt Barlow, y ya puestos a pedir, con “Ripper” Owens, por qué no. Tal vez para el 40 cumpleaños. En cualquier caso, esta remasterización tiene un sonido fresco y nítido, da igual en el formato que sea y las veces que se reedite, es un auténtico placer volver a disfrutar de uno de los mejores discos y más relevantes de Iced Earth, y de la historia del Heavy Metal. ¡Feliz aniversario!

The legendary self-titled debut of Heavy Metal giants Iced Earth turns 30. On December 18, and from the hand of Century Media, he returns in a new remix and high-quality remastering courtesy of the American producer Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Crowbar, Demons & Wizards, Overkill, Queensrÿche, etc.), which also he worked with the group on their latest album, “Incorruptible”.

“Iced Earth” will be available on a limited edition digipak CD, digital album and, for the most fanatics, on 180 gram vinyl, with the possibility of purchasing it in 5 different colors (in classic black, dark green, neon orange, sky blue, blood red), plus a new cover redesigned from the European original. A true past that will delight any collector.

Possibly, “Iced Earth” is one of the most reissued or remastered albums of recent years, I have in my possession the first one from 2002, then there were several more, perhaps too many, although I deduce, anniversaries and separate advertising, than what it was intended to improve the original sound, we are talking about 1990 and the production was not bad at all, but it could be improved.

The first time I listened to this album it blew me away, and the same thing continues to happen to me today. I was stunned when they went from quiet moments, some of them dark and heavy, others with acoustic passages and slight keyboards, to unexpected, complex, melodic, fast, galloping rhythm changes, between thrash and power, and there were few groups there, back then, to mix such ingredients in such an ingenious way.

A complete album where there are, eight songs, including the acoustic interlude “Solitude”, and which one better. I find it difficult to highlight any when all are remarkable, perhaps the epic “When The Night Falls”, a nine-minute marvel that gives you the impression that it lasts much less.

In addition to the above, all of them have a well-defined rhythmic base, a great variety of riffs and incisive and technical solos, giving a characteristic stamp to the group, here we must point out the excellent work of Randy Shawver, underrated guitarist, in my opinion, it may also be because who won the most awards was Jon Schaffer, leader, founder, rhythm guitar and only member left today, and the only thing that did not convince me at all is his singer, Gene Adam (Purgatory), in fact Schaffer asked him to take singing lessons and Adam refused, so for the second album, “Night of the Stormrider”, he was replaced by John Greely.

Personally, I would have preferred a re-recording with the current line-up, or with Matt Barlow, and on demand, with “Ripper” Owens, why not. Maybe for the 40th birthday. Anyway, this remastering has a fresh and clear sound, no matter what format it is and how many times it is reissued, it is a real pleasure to once again enjoy one of the best and most relevant albums of Iced Earth, and the history of Heavy Metal.
