Reseña – review: Holding Absence “The Greatest Mistake Of My Life”

Si uno empieza a buscar bandas que hayan hecho ruido en la escena post-hardcore en el último lustro, es difícil que en un hipotético top 5 no estén incluidos los británicos Holding Absence, quienes con su emocionante y potente debut conquistaron por igual a público, prensa e incluso compañeros de profesión, todos coincidimos en que esta joven banda está destinada a ser la más grande de UK en su escena seguramente desde Funeral For A Friend.

Pese al título pesimista de su nuevo trabajo, os podemos asegurar que la banda no ha cometido ningún error y que su segundo álbum promete ser una de las joyas del 2021.

El disco arranca de forma nostálgica con “Awake”, con un Lucas Woodland estallando en el estribillo demostrando que pese a todos los contratiempos con los que nos podamos cruzar en el camino, siempre hay algún motivo para seguir viviendo y juntar fuerzas para ello. Quizás no es el corte más explosivo y hardcore que se esperaba pero tiene ese toque emotivo que tenían temas como “Into Oblivion” de Funeral For A Friend o “We Apologize For Nothing” de Fightstar y eso nos vale para ir sumergiéndonos en el disco.

Lo mismo sucede con la preciosa “Celebration Song”, un corte hermoso en donde HA celebran la vida, el amor que sentimos por nuestros semejantes y poder sentir y existir pese a las adversidades. Un corte muy muy intenso en cuanto a lo lírico y algo más rockera que la anterior pero siempre manteniendo su esencia, da igual el cúmulo de sentimientos que tengas dentro, justamente son estos los que te hacen humano y te permiten vivir y pasar por las diferentes etapas de la vida. Este es uno de los mejores cortes del disco sin duda alguna.

La intensidad que manejan estos chicos es abrumadora y eso se pone de manifiesto en “Curse Me With Your Kiss”, un corte que habla de aquella persona que se fue y cuya ausencia te sigue afectando y dañando, a veces creemos que un duelo se pasa y quedan los recuerdos, pero lo cierto es que no todo es tan fácil como parece y justamente de esto es lo que HA hablan en la canción, un corte por el que bandas como We Are The Ocean o Armor For Sleep hubiesen matado hace una década atrás.

“Afterlife” es una de las primeras canciones que pudimos escuchar del disco y habla de esa persona que aunque no esté sabes que te cuida desde donde se encuentre y por la que sientes un amor que sobrepasa los límites de la vida humana.

Esto es otra cosa a favor del disco como la historia que hay en cada canción tiene un hilo conductor y eso te hace sumergirte aún más en las letras y la historia.

Este no es un disco para poner de fondo y poco más, no este disco es para dedicarle su tiempo adecuado y empaparte de la intensidad y las diversas emociones que en él mismo se manejan.

Llegamos a uno de los cortes más delicados del disco y es que “Drugs And Love” habla de esa tendencia que tenemos las personas cuando sufrimos algún tipo de depresión de intentar tapar esa herida con algún tipo de adicción en lugar de intentar hacer frente al problema real por el que estamos pasando y eso nos acaba haciendo aún más daño.

A veces creemos que por encontrar a una persona con la que congeniamos o por usar algún tipo de sustancia para cubrir las heridas, vamos a estar mejor en lugar de hacer frente al dolor e intentar vencerlo.

Sin duda un corte muy muy delicado que pone los pelos como escarpias desde la primera escucha.

Bajamos la intensidad un poquito pero nos sumergimos igualmente en la triste “In Circles” que narra una historia que yo creo que todos hemos vivido alguna vez y es como a veces tenemos esa sensación de creer que no hay más vida más allá de tu puerta y de la chica de al lado, esa con la que sueñas hasta despierto pero no te atreves a confesar lo que sientes, a veces es muy doloroso avanzar y dejar atrás ese sentimiento pero es igualmente necesario para no caer en la monotonía y en pensar si llegará el día que tanto anhelas por arte de magia.

De nuevo el sonido es muy trabajado con los arreglos y las voces muy en la onda de bandas como Saosin y Our Last Night, pero siempre sonando a ellos mismos y seguro que será de las favoritas de los fans en cuanto tengan acceso al disco completo.

El disco en si es una montaña rusa de sensaciones y elementos a analizar con cada escucha y puedo asegurar que con cada una va ganando puntos y te vas adentrando aún más en el mismo.

Holding Absence siguen evolucionando tras un gran debut y justifican el “Hype” que se había creado para con ellos en este nuevo álbum, demostrando porque son una de las bandas alternativas del momento y que lo suyo visto el nivel alcanzo en este segundo trabajo no tiene límites.

If one starts looking for bands that have made noise in the post-hardcore scene in the last five years, it is difficult that in a hypothetical top 5 the British Holding Absence are not included, who with their exciting and powerful debut conquered the public equally, Press and even colleagues, we all agree that this young band is destined to be the biggest in the UK in its scene surely since Funeral For A Friend.

Despite the pessimistic title of their new work, we can assure you that the band has not made any mistakes and that their second album promises to be one of the jewels of 2021.

The album starts nostalgically with “Awake”, with a Lucas Woodland exploding in the chorus, showing that despite all the setbacks we may come across along the way, there is always some reason to continue living and gather strength for it. Perhaps it is not the most explosive and hardcore cut that was expected but it has that emotional touch that songs like “Into Oblivion” by Funeral For A Friend or “We Apologize For Nothing” by Fightstar had and that is enough to immerse ourselves in the album.

The same happens with the beautiful “Celebration Song”, a beautiful cut where HA celebrate life, the love we feel for our fellow men and being able to feel and exist despite adversity. A very very intense cut in terms of the lyrical and something more rocker than the previous one but always maintaining its essence, it does not matter the accumulation of feelings you have inside, these are precisely the ones that make you human and allow you to live and go through the different stages of life. This is one of the best cuts on the album without a doubt.

The intensity that these guys handle is overwhelming and that is revealed in “Curse Me With Your Kiss”, a cut that talks about that person who left and whose absence continues to affect and damage you, sometimes we believe that a duel is over and the memories remain, but the truth is that not everything is as easy as it seems and precisely this is what HA talk about in the song, a cut for which bands like We Are The Ocean or Armor For Sleep would have killed a decade ago behind.

“Afterlife” is one of the first songs that we could hear from the album and it talks about that person who, even though he is not there, you know that he takes care of you from where he is and for whom you feel a love that exceeds the limits of human life.

This is another thing in favor of the album as the story in each song has a common thread and that makes you immerse yourself even more in the lyrics and the story.

This is not an album to put in the background and little else, not this album is to dedicate your adequate time and soak up the intensity and the various emotions that are handled in it.

We come to one of the most delicate cuts on the album and that is that “Drugs And Love” speaks of that tendency that people have when we suffer some kind of depression of trying to cover that wound with some kind of addiction instead of trying to deal with the problem. real we are going through and that ends up doing us even more damage.

Sometimes we think that by finding a person with whom we get along or by using some kind of substance to cover the wounds, we will be better instead of facing the pain and trying to overcome it.

Undoubtedly a very very delicate cut that makes the hairs like spikes from the first listen.

We lower the intensity a little but we also immerse ourselves in the sad “In Circles” that tells a story that I think we have all lived at some time and it is how sometimes we have that feeling of believing that there is no more life beyond your door and Of the girl next door, the one you dream of until you wake up but you don’t dare to confess what you feel, sometimes it is very painful to move forward and leave that feeling behind but it is equally necessary to avoid falling into monotony and to think if it will come the day you want so much by magic.

Again the sound is very worked with the arrangements and the voices very in the vein of bands like Saosin and Our Last Night, but always sounding themselves and it will surely be a fan favorite as soon as they have access to the full album.

The album itself is a roller coaster of sensations and elements to analyze with each listen and I can assure you that with each one you gain points and you get even deeper into it.

Holding Absence continue to evolve after a great debut and justify the “Hype” that had been created for them on this new album, proving why they are one of the alternative bands of the moment and that their seen the level reached in this second album does not have limits.
