Entrevista – interview: Havamal

Havamal es una banda sueca formada en 2016 que realizan una mezcla de Viking, Black y Death Metal con maestría. este 2021 acaban de publicar su segundo álbum “The Shadow Chapter”. En Algoderock hemos charlado con Björn Larsson vocalista de la banda para conocer mejor este nuevo disco y su futuro más inmediato.

Algoderock: En primer lugar quiero agradecer a Havamal por darnos esta entrevista y felicitaros por el segundo álbum “The Shadow Chapter”.

Björn Larsson: ¡Hail from Mother North! Le agradecemos esta entrevista y sus elogios por nuestro último lanzamiento.

Algoderock: ¿Cómo ha sido el trabajo de composición de este álbum con esta maldita pandemia de por medio?

B.L .: Ha funcionado de maravilla incluso con una pandemia devastadora. Todos hemos colaborado con ideas de forma virtual y, gracias a Dios, hemos podido ensayar juntos. Las ideas crecieron incluso antes de la pandemia, por lo que teníamos un gran terreno desde el que empezar cuando las restricciones afectaron al mundo.

Algoderock: Se observan diferentes influencias en el álbum. ¿Cuáles son los grupos que han marcado la composición del grupo?

B.L .: Es bastante difícil de precisar. Todos y cada uno tienen diferentes inspiraciones de las que inspirarse, desde Fleshgod Apocalypse hasta Nightwish, pero eso es solo la imagen del sonido y el espíritu. La composición tiene sus raíces en nuestras propias creaciones y realmente no se puede atribuir a nadie más que a los propios miembros.

Algoderock: De momento, ¿ves la posibilidad de tocar en directo este verano?

B-L .: Desafortunadamente, las posibilidades son escasas o nulas, pero estamos teniendo largas conversaciones con el sello para posibles giras y dominación mundial en el futuro, después de la pandemia.

Algoderock: ¿Cómo está la escena del metal en tu país actualmente?

B.L .: Hemorragia en vivo, debido a restricciones de covid. Creo que la comunidad virtual está aumentando aún más, considerando nuestro oyente doméstico en, por ejemplo, Spotify. En Finlandia se les conoce por forjar un gran metal debido a la oscuridad y el frío, y creo que con una crisis nace más música para expresar esto.

Algoderock: ¿Alguna vez has pensado en hacer una gira por España?

B.L .: ¡Nos encantaría visitar España! El cuartel principal de nuestras marcas se encuentra allí y España tiene una larga historia de abrazar verdaderamente la escena del metal. ¡Sería un honor dejar que nuestros Drakkars pusieran rumbo a las costas españolas!

Algoderock: Volviendo al segundo álbum “The Shadow Chapter”, ¿quién ha tenido el mayor peso compositivo?

B.L .: Todos compartimos ese peso. Una canción generalmente comienza con una pequeña parte en la que luego todos agregan sus propias piezas hasta que se convierte en una canción completa que incorpora las preferencias de todos y cada uno. Ese es un gran núcleo en lo que hace que nuestra música sea “Havamal”.

Algoderock: Hablemos del tema del álbum, ¿es este un álbum conceptual? O habéis preferido contar historias diferentes.

B.L .: El concepto principal trata sobre los monstruos de la mitología nórdica y sus historias principales. Pero también habita en las tinieblas del hombre y que no todo es blanco o negro, sino a veces escalado de grises. Todo el mundo tiene un monstruo dentro.

Algoderock: ¿De dónde viene vuestra pasión por todo lo que cuentan las canciones?

B.L .: Varía. Todos amamos nuestra herencia y la tradición vikinga, pero, por ejemplo, la historia de Krakens proviene de mi experiencia en Disneyland París cuando tenía cinco años y casi me asusté de un ataque de calamar de 20.000 Leguas de Viaje Submarino, que a su vez me dio la pavorosa pasión por los calamares gigantes, C’thulu y la mística de los océanos profundos. Y ese es solo uno de los cuentos de origen para crear algo personal a partir de algo tan famoso, ¡jaja!

Algoderock: ¿Qué diferencia ves en comparación con vuestro álbum anterior?

B.L .: Creo que más grande, más sinfónico y maduro. Un nuevo estudio nos ayudó a progresar más allá de nuestras imaginaciones más salvajes y seguramente continuará a lo largo de nuestro próximo álbum, si es que Odins lo hará.

Algoderock: ¿Quién fue el autor de la portada?

B.L .: Alex Rommel, también conocido como Aerroscape, un artista increíble que ha creado obras maestras como Suotana y Crepuscle. Sus dibujos de conciencia de la tierra son increíbles y no podríamos estar más felices con el resultado final.

Havamal is a Swedish band formed in 2016 that masterfully perform a mix of Viking, Black and Death Metal. this 2021 they have just released their second album “The Shadow Chapter”. In Algoderock we have chatted with Björn Larsson, lead singer of the band to learn more about this new album and its immediate future.

Algoderock: First of all I want to thank Havamal for giving us this interview and  congratulate you on your second album “The Shadow Chapter”.  

Björn Larsson: Hail from mother North! We thank you for this interview and for  your praise on our latest release.  

Algoderock: How has the compositional work on this album been with this damn pandemic in between?  

B.L.: It has worked wonders even with a raging pandemic. We’ve all  pitched in with ideas virtually, and We’ve been able to rehearse together  thankfully. The ideas grew even before the pandemic, so We had a  great ground to start from when the restrictions hit the world.  

Algoderock: Different influences are observed on the album. What are the groups  that have marked the composition of the group?  

B.L.: It’s quite hard to pinpoint. Each and everyone have different  inspirations to draw from, all from Fleshgod Apocalypse to Nightwish,  but that’s just the sound image and spirit. The composition is rooted in  our own creations and can’t really be credited to anyone but the  members themselves.  

Algoderock: At the moment, do you see the possibility of playing live this summer?  

B-L.: The possibilities are slim to none unfortunately, but We’re having  long talks with the label for possible tours and world domination in the  time to come, post-pandemic that is.  

Algoderock: How is the metal scene in your country currently?  

B.L.: Hemorrhaging live, due to covid restrictions. The virtual  community I believe is rising all the more, considering our domestic  listener on for example Spotify. In Finland they’re known for forging  great metal due to darkness and cold, and I believe that with a crisis  more music to express this is born.

Algoderock: Do you ever have the thought of touring in Spain?  

B.L.: We would love to visit Spain! Our labels main quarters is located  there and Spain has a long history of truly embracing the metal scene. It  would be an honor to let our Drakkars set course on the Spanish  shores!  

Algoderock: Going back to your second album “The Shadow Chapter”, who has  carried the greatest compositional weight?  

B.L.: We all share that weight. A song usually starts with a small part  that later on everyone adds their own pieces into until it grows to a full  song that incorporates each and everyones preferences. That is a huge  core in what makes our music “Havamal”.  

Algoderock: Let’s talk about the theme of the album, is this a conceptual album?  Or have you preferred to tell different stories.  

B.L.: The main concept is about the monsters of the norse mythology,  and their main stories. But it also dwells in the darkness of man and  that not everything is white or black, but sometimes gray-scaled.  Everyone has a monster within.

Algoderock: Where does your passion for everything your songs tell you come from?  

B.L.: It varies. We all have a love for our heritage and the viking lore,  but for example Krakens story comes from my experience in Disneyland  Paris when I was five years old and almost got scared sh.tless from a  squid attack from 20.000 Leagues under the Sea which in turn gave me  the fearful passion for giant squids, C’thulu and the mystique of the  deep oceans. And that is only one of the origin tales to create  something personal from something that famous, haha!

Algoderock: What difference have you seen compared to your previous album?  

B.L.: Bigger, more symphonic and mature I believe. A new studio  helped us progress beyond our wildest imaginations and will surely  continue throughout our next album, if this is Odins will.  

Algoderock: Who was the author of the cover?  

B.L.: Alex Rommel aka Aerroscape, an amazing artist that have  created masterpieces for example Suotana and Crepuscle. His earth  awareness drawings are unbelievable and We couldn’t be happier with  the end result.
