Entrevista – Interview: Andrew Elchinger, Seaway

Aprovechando la salida de su fantástico nuevo album “Big Vibe”, no perdimos la oportunidad de reunirnos con Andrew Elchinger, guitarra de Seaway, para que nos cuente más sobre este nuevo trabajo y saber alguna que otra curiosidad más acerca del cuarteto canadiense al que la etiqueta “Punk Pop” se le empieza a quedar pequeña.

Algoderock: Hola, aquí Lucas de Algoderock, en primer lugar felicitaciones por el nuevo álbum, en mi opinión uno de los mejores discos del año hasta ahora, y segundo quiero que me digas cómo fue el proceso de escritura y creación el nuevo disco, sobre todo en estos delicados días a causa del Coronavirus.

Andrew Elchinger: ¡Gracias por tus palabras tan amables Lucas! El álbum fue escrito y grabado justo antes de que llegara el Coronavirus, por lo que no fue un problema para nosotros. Un par de meses después de que se completase el disco, todos estábamos aburridos en cuarentena y comencé a escribir más canciones. Dado que el lanzamiento del disco iba a retrasarse debido a la pandemia, decidimos volver al estudio una vez que las cosas se aflojasen un poco y hacer un par de canciones más. Esa canción extra terminó siendo “Mrs. David”, que es una de mis favoritas del álbum.

Algoderock: Han pasado tres años desde que salió “Vacation” y, mirando hacia atrás, ¿cómo te sientes con ese álbum?

A.E .: No he escuchado “Vacation” en un tiempo, pero todavía me gustan un montón de canciones de ese álbum. “London”, “Lula”, “Car Seat Magazine” y “Curse Me Out” siguen siendo mis favoritas y canciones que me encanta tocar en vivo. Cuando escucho ese álbum siempre me recuerda el tiempo que pasamos en Los Ángeles grabándolo y los buenos momentos que pasamos allí durante seis semanas.

Algoderock: Si escuchas el álbum, podrías encontrar algunas influencias interesantes como Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Fountains Of Wayne o The Starting Line, ¿verdad? o no es necesario.

A.E .: ¡Yo diría que es completamente exacto y todas esas bandas han sido grandes influencias para Seaway desde el principio! ¡Sin embargo, hubo un montón de otras influencias en “Big Vibe” como Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Super American y muchas más!

Algoderock: En realidad, si escuchas la primera canción del álbum (“Brain In The Jar”), podrías escuchar algunas influencias de “Time Like These” de la canción de Foo Fighters, ¿estás de acuerdo?

A.E .: Nunca me había dado cuenta de eso, pero definitivamente puedo verlo. Es una gran canción, así que agradezco la comparación. ¡Ambos rockeros de alta energía!

Algoderock: Eres de Cánada, en el pasado algunas grandes bandas eran realmente grandes en la escena alternativa como Sum 41, Gob, Billy Talent, Moneen, Alexisonfire incluso Comeback Kid, ¿crees que Seaway podría ser esa banda que puso Canadá en la escena alternativa de nuevo como sucedió en el pasado?

A.E .: Todas esas bandas fueron muy influyentes e importantes tanto para nosotros como banda como para la música canadiense en general, por lo que formar parte de ellas sería un honor. No sé si se nos puede atribuir el mérito de poner a Canadá en el mapa en términos de la escena alternativa de la forma en que lo hicieron esas bandas, pero sí sé que después de que firmamos con Pure Noise Records, muchos sellos estadounidenses comenzaron a mostrar interés y firmar con un grupo de bandas canadienses más pequeñas, lo cual fue realmente genial de ver.

Algoderock: Volviendo al álbum, una de mis canciones favoritas es “Still Blue”, cuál es la historia detrás de esa canción porque creo que es una de las mejores canciones jamás escritas hasta ahora.

A.E .: ¡Gracias! “Still Blue” fue una de las primeras canciones que comenzamos a escribir para el álbum aproximadamente un año antes de grabar, y fue una de las últimas que se completaron en el estudio. En realidad, está escrito sobre un equipo de hockey local aquí en Toronto, que es probablemente una de las cosas más canadienses que una banda de Canadá podría hacer jaja. Obviamente no hemos podido tocarla en vivo todavía, pero es una canción con mucha energía y ha sido muy divertido tocar con los chicos.

Algoderock: La portada del álbum es genial, ¿quién la diseñó o se le ocurrió la idea?

A.E .: Benjamin Lieber hizo todas las ilustraciones del álbum. La banda hemos sido amigos suyos durante un tiempo y grandes admiradores, así que le dimos un dominio creativo durante todo el proceso. Nos dio 5 o 6 ideas, todas fantásticas, y al final aterrizamos en esta. Le dimos algunas notas aquí y allá, pero es un artista tan talentoso y en su mayor parte manejó todo,

Algoderock: Ahora el año está arruinado, ¿cuáles son los planes para el 2021, como hacer giras, hacer algunos festivales, más videoclips…?

A.E .: Tenemos algunas cosas planeadas, pero quién sabe cómo será el 2021 con todo lo que está sucediendo en este momento. Definitivamente haremos más vídeos. Tal vez una transmisión en vivo y otro vídeo y tal vez incluso algunas canciones nuevas. ¡Ya veremos!

Algoderock: Toda la escena pop punk o alternativa está hablando de ese disco, pero ¿qué piensas tú del álbum “Tickets To My Downfall” de Machine Gun Kelly?

A.E .: Lo he escuchado varias veces y hay algunas canciones realmente pegadizas. Creo que es realmente genial cómo está en todas las radios y es bueno que las estaciones están tocando nuevas canciones pop punk en el aire, lo que no ha sucedido en años, al menos en Canadá.

Algoderock: Cuando crucéis el mar para hacer una gira por Europa, ¿hay alguna posibilidad de verte en España?, algunos de tus amigos como State Champs, Real Friends, As It Is, Neck Deep incluso Tonight Alive en realidad han actuado aquí y les ha encantado nuestro país, por lo que estamos ansiosos por verte tocar en España lo antes posible.

A.E .: No hemos hecho tantas giras por Europa como nos gustaría, lo que significa que tampoco hemos tocado en tantos países como nos gustaría. Nunca he estado en España y siempre he querido viajar allí, ¡así que hacerlo con Seaway sería un placer absoluto! Con suerte, una vez que todo se haya calmado, podremos ir a tocar para toda la gente encantadora de España.

Algoderock: Muchas gracias por tu tiempo y si quieres decir algo a tus fans en España y Europa, siéntante libre de hacerlo y espero verlos el año que viene en la carretera.

A.E .: Gracias por el apoyo continuo de Seaway y estamos ansiosos por tocar estas nuevas canciones para todos ustedes una vez que sea el momento adecuado.

Taking advantage of the release of their fantastic new album “Big Vibe”, we did not miss the opportunity to meet with Andrew Elchinger, guitar from Seaway, to tell us more about this new work and to know some other curiosity about the Canadian quartet to which the label “Punk Pop “is starting to get too small.

Algoderock: Hi guys, Lucas here from AlgoDeRock , first of all congratulations for the new album, in my opinion one of the best récords of the year so far, and second I want you to tell me how was the writing process and create the new record, especially on these delicate days beacuse of the Coronavirus?

Andrew Elchinger: Thank you for the kind words Lucas! The album was written and recorded right before the Coronavirus hit so it wasn’t really an issue for us. A couple months after the record was completed, we were all bored in quarantine and I started writing more songs. Since the record release was going to get pushed back due to the pandemic, we decided to go back into the studio once things had loosened up a bit and do a couple more songs. That extra song ended up being Mrs. David, which is one of my favourites on the album. 

Algoderock: It’s been three years since “Vacation” came out and looking back, How do you guys feel about that album?

A.E.: I haven’t listened to Vacation in a while but I still really like a bunch of songs off of that album. London, Lula, Car Seat Magazine and Curse Me Out are still favourites of mine and songs that I love to play live. When I listen to that album it always brings me back to the time we spent in LA recording it and the great times we had hanging down there for six weeks. 

Algoderock: If you listen the album, you could find some interesting influences like Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Fountains Of Wayne or The Starting Line, Am i right? or not necessary.

A.E.: I would say that’s completely accurate and all of those bands have been big influences for Seaway since the beginning! There were a bunch of other influences going in to Big Vibe though like Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Super American and many more!

Algoderock: Actually if you hear the first song on the album (” Brain In The Jar”), you could hear some influences of the “Time Like These” by  the Foo Fighters song, do you agree?

A.E.: I’ve never noticed that but can definitely see it. That’s a great song so I appreciate the comparison. Both high energy rockers!

Algoderock: You’re from Cánada, back in the day some many great bands were really big on the alternative scene like Sum 41, Gob , Billy Talent, Moneen, Alexisonfire even Comeback Kid, Do you think that Seaway could be that band that put Canada on the alternative scene again like happen in the past?

A.E.: All of those bands were very influential and important for both us as a band, and Canadian music in general, so to be grouped in with them would be an honour. I don’t know if we can be credited with putting Canada on the map in terms of the alternative scene the way those bands did, but I do know that after we got signed to Pure Noise, a lot of American labels starting showing interest and signing a bunch of smaller Canadian bands, which was really cool to see. 

Algoderock: Back to the album, one of my favourite songs is “Still Blue”, what’s the story behind that song and I think is one of your best songs ever written so far.

A.E.: Thank you! Still Blue was one of the first songs we started writing for the album a year or so before we recorded, and was one of the last ones completed in the studio. It’s actually written about a local hockey team here in Toronto, which is probably one of the most Canadian things a band from Canada could possibly do haha! Obviously we haven’t been able to play it live yet, but it’s such a high energy song and it’s been so fun to jam with the guys. 

Algoderock: The album cover is pretty cool, Who design it or came with the idea for it?

A.E.: Benjamin Lieber did all the artwork for the album. We’ve been a friend of his for a while and huge fans so we kind of gave him creative reign over the whole process. He gave us 5 or 6 ideas, which were all fantastic, and in the end we landed on this one. We gave him a few notes here and there but he’s such a talented artist and for the most part he handled everything, 

Algoderock: Now the year is ruined, What’s your plans of 2021, like touring, do some festivals, more videoclips..? 

A.E.: We have a few things planned but who knows what 2021 will actually look like with everything going on right now. We will definitely do some more video stuff. Maybe a live stream and another video and maybe even some new songs. We’ll see!

Algoderock: All the pop punk or alternative scene are talking about that record, but what do you guys think about Machine Gun Kelly’s Tickets To My Downfall album?

A.E.: I’ve listened to it a few times and there are some really catchy songs. I think it’s really cool how he’s all over the radio and these stations are playing straight up new pop punk songs on the air, which hasn’t happened in years, at least in Canada. 

Algoderock: When you cross the sea to tour in Europe, Is there any chance to see you in Spain?, some of your friends like State Champs, Real Friends, As It Is, Neck Deep even Tonight Alive actually have been played here and loved our country, so we can’t wait to see you play in Spain as soon as possible.

A.E.: We haven’t toured Europe as much as we’d like to, which means we haven’t played in as many countries as we’d like to either. I’ve never been to Spain and have always wanted to travel there so to do it with Seaway would be an absolute treat! Hopefully once everything settles down we’ll be able to come play for all of the lovely people of Spain.
