[Review] Nidhoeggr: cuando las etiquetas nos condenan

Nidhoeggr, banda suiza de Folk metal, nos trae su segundo trabajo “Arise” de la mano de Art Gates Record saliendo a la venta el 29 Octubre. Mi primera sorpresa ante el desconocimiento de la banda es que este larga duración, según es etiquetado su estilo musical me esperaba un trabajo mucho más duro incluso acercándose a grupos como Ensiferum. Nada más allá de la realidad, la banda practica una mezcla de Folk metal y melodic metal que los acerca más a bandas como Kopliklaani, Finntroll o sus paisanos Eluveitie con el uso de diversos instrumentos como el clavicémbalo o el acordeón consiguiendo pasajes instrumentales muy buenos, y temas que bien se pueden tocar en una fiesta pagana.

El disco se inicia con la Intro “Departure” que sirve de preludio perfecto para el tema “The Journey” que arranca con unos coros vikingos y ritmos lúdico festivos a cargo del acordeón que acompaña a la voz gutural de Janos y hace el tema más armonioso, dicho tema lo podría firmar Kopliklaani perfectamente. “Onwards” empieza con el sonido de clavicémbalo dando una melodía que me recuerda inevitablemente a los germanos Helloween en el tema “Ms God”, tema de Folk metal con guitarras rítmicas melódicas y buenos coros.

“Twilight Zone” se reparten el trabajo entre violín y acordeón para crear un tema de Folk metal con toques divertidos y coros vikingos. “Scorched Earth” se inicia con un bajo dinámico que nos introduce en un tema algo más duro con la voz de Janos con matices black y esas trompetas solemnes en off acompañando al tema, y ya comienzan a aparecer un matiz Death en cierto tramos de batería. “Rise and Fall” tema en medio tiempo con sonidos de trompeta que acompaña a la rítmica y coros armoniosos.

“Mighty Willow” inicia con el órgano para dar paso a una batería death rápida, alternándose ambos instrumentos para definir las partes melódicas de las típicamente Death. “Desolation” es de los mejores temas del disco constituyéndose como un tema de death metal melódico como mandan los cánones, de los temas más crudos del disco. “Good of Lies” sigue la tónica de su antecesora desapareciendo los elementos Folk. “Winters Night” regresan las guitarras más melódicas y ese piano dulcifica la voz de Janos y vuelven los coros vikingos de acompañamiento. “Arise” tema que da título al disco y que se erige en un tema obscuro donde los coros solemnes acompañan a sonidos de batería marciales, en un inicio a medio tiempo para luego dar pinceladas de baterías rápidas que te sacan del letargo.

Definitivamente estamos ante un buen disco de folk metal combinado con melodic metal, viéndose bien definido una primera parte del disco mucho más divertida y Folk y una segunda parte donde realizan un death/melodic death más crudo dando la versión más áspera del grupo. Buen disco que aún así desconcierta porque parece que presentan 2 caras de una moneda pudiendo no ser del agrado de todos los públicos. No obstante es un grupo para no perder el hilo y por supuesto tenerlo en nuestra estantería. Un saludo.

Nidhoeggr, a Swiss folk metal band, brings us their second album “Arise” by Art Gates Record, going on sale on October 29th. My first surprise at the band’s ignorance is that this LP, as its musical style is labeled, I expected a much harder album as the group approached bands like Ensiferum. Nothing beyond reality, the band practices a mixture of Folk metal and melodic metal that brings them closer to bands like Kopliklaani, Finntroll or their fellow countrymen Eluveitie with the use of various instruments such as the harpsichord or the accordion, achieving very good instrumental passages, and themes that can well be played at a pagan festival.

The album begins with the Intro “Departure” that serves as the perfect prelude to the song “The Journey” that starts with some Viking choruses and festive playful rhythms by the accordion that accompanies Janos’s guttural voice and makes the song more harmonious , said theme could be signed by Kopliklaani perfectly. “Onwards” begins with the harpsichord sound giving a melody that inevitably reminds me of the German Helloween in the song “Ms God”, a Folk metal theme with melodic rhythmic guitars and good choruses.

“Mighty Willow” begins with the organ to give way to a fast death drums, alternating both instruments to define the melodic parts of the typically Death. “Desolation” is one of the best songs on the album, constituting itself as a melodic death metal song as the canons dictate, one of the crudest songs on the album. “Good of Lies” follows the trend of its predecessor, disappearing the Folk elements. “Winters Night” return the most melodic guitars and that piano softens Janos’s voice and the backing Viking choirs return. “Arise” song that gives the album its title and that stands out as an obscure theme where solemn choirs accompany martial drum sounds, initially at halftime and then giving touches of fast drums that bring you out of lethargy.

We are definitely facing a good album of folk metal combined with melodic metal, looking well defined a first part of the album much more fun and Folk and a second part where they perform a more raw death / melodic death giving the roughest version of the group. Good album that still puzzles because it seems that they present 2 sides of a coin and may not be to the liking of all audiences. However, it is a group so as not to lose the thread and of course have it on our shelf. All the best.
