Reseña – review: Burning Witches “The Witch Of The North”

Tras unos meses bastante intensos, las metaleras suizas Burning Witches vuelven a escena con su cuarto disco de estudio que trae como novedad principal la inclusión de Larissa Ernst como segunda guitarrista tras la sorpresiva marcha de Sonia Anubis (Ahora en las filas de Crypta) y que además es el segundo trabajo con su (ya no tan nueva) cantante Laura Guldemond integrada al 100% en la formación suiza.

La banda sigue esa senda tan marcada por el heavy metal de corte clásico y melódico con guiños a bandas como pueden ser Judas Priest o Warlock pero siempre dándole el toque personal por medio de la voz de Laura, o vozarrón porque en este disco se puede apreciar aún más el potencial que tiene esta talentosa cantante holandesa.

Quizás de los cuatro discos sea el que necesita más escuchas para poder sumergirte en su universo ya que nos podremos encontrar temas como “Witches Of The North”, un maravilloso y potente single que engancha desde la primera escucha pero que suena más melódico de lo habitual y quizás eso no atraiga del todo a los primeros seguidores de la banda y si a aquellos que sean afines a formaciones como Sister Sin o Kobra And The Lotus, con los cuales comparten más de un guiño musical e incluso estético.

Laura brilla como ella sola en el firmamento gracias a su gran voz que nos convence tanto en las partes más agudas como en las melodías del estribillo.

Luego las chicas nos regalan una trilogía de temas que tienen resultados algo dispares, ya que mientras “Tainted Ritual” es más continuista de la anterior pero sin ser tan redonda, “We Stand As One” es mucho más intensa y sentida dejando claro desde el título que Burning Witches están por encima de las individualidades y que la marcha de Sonia no significa que el grupo no pueda seguir sin ellas, aquí todas están a una y una para todas y así lo deja claro esta potente pieza y por último tenemos “Flight Of The Valkyries” que destaca sobre todo por el ritmo que presenta ya que va de menos a más y de nuevo podría pasar por un tema de los Battle Beast más heavies o la parte más ruda de Kobra And The Lotus, aunque no sea la mejor pieza del disco siendo justos.

Otras piezas destacadas serían el baladón “Lady Of The Woods”, el momento más emotivo y “soft” del disco pero en donde podemos observar el talento inmenso que tiene Laura y como domina cualquier registro que se le presente, aquí es imposible no mencionar la influencia de la reina del heavy metal Doro Pesch, de la cual ha tomado mucho aprendizaje y lo plasma como pocas en su estilo actualmente.

Mientras que por el contrario en temas como “The Circle Of Five” o “Thrall”, vemos la cara más cañera de las chicas y esas influencias clásicas que salen a la luz y plasman muy bien en ambas piezas, quizás entre medio de algunas canciones ya mencionadas ganarían más puntos en el resultado final pero no dejan de ser dos de los grandes momentos del disco.

Pero si hay que nombrar el mejor momento del álbum ese viene de la mano sin duda de “Nine Woods”, un espectacular corte de heavy metal potente y que combina el sonido y las armonías clásicas pero con una producción bastante moderna para este estilo de música y cuyo resultado es simplemente fantástico.

Seguramente no sea el mejor álbum de BW hasta la fecha pero la realidad es que las chicas han sabido recuperar el vuelo y volver con aires totalmente renovados para demostrarnos porque son una de las mejores formaciones de heavy metal europeo de los últimos tiempos, repito al disco hay que darle su tiempo pero cuando lo hagas estoy convencido de que acabará por conquistarte y si no tiempo al tiempo.

After a few quite intense months, the Swiss metalmakers Burning Witches return to the scene with their fourth studio album that brings as a main novelty the inclusion of Larissa Ernst as second guitarist after the surprise departure of Sonia Anubis (Now in the ranks of Crypta) and that it is also the second work with his (not so new) singer Laura Guldemond integrated 100% in the Swiss band.

The band follows that path so marked by classic and melodic heavy metal with nods to bands such as Judas Priest or Warlock but always giving it the personal touch through Laura’s voice, or loud voice because on this album you can appreciate even more the potential that this talented Dutch singer has.

Perhaps of the four albums it is the one that needs more listens to be able to immerse yourself in its universe since we can find songs like “Witches Of The North”, a wonderful and powerful single that hooks from the first listen but that sounds more melodic than usual. And perhaps that does not quite attract the first followers of the band and those who are related to formations such as Sister Sin or Kobra And The Lotus, with whom they share more than a musical and even aesthetic wink.

Laura shines like herself in the sky thanks to her great voice that convinces us both in the higher parts and in the melodies of the chorus.

Then the girls give us a trilogy of songs that have somewhat different results, since while “Tainted Ritual” is more continuous than the previous one but without being so round, “We Stand As One” is much more intense and heartfelt, making it clear from the Title that Burning Witches are above individualities and that Sonia’s departure does not mean that the group cannot continue without them, here they are all one and one for all and this is what this powerful piece makes clear and finally we have “Flight Of The Valkyries “which stands out above all for the rhythm it presents since it goes from less to more and again it could go through a theme from the heaviest Battle Beast or the roughest part of Kobra And The Lotus, although it is not the best disc piece being fair.

Other outstanding pieces would be the baladón “Lady Of The Woods”, the most emotional and “soft” moment of the album but where we can observe the immense talent that Laura has and how she dominates any register that comes her way, here it is impossible not to mention the influence of the heavy metal queen Doro Pesch, from whom she has taken a lot of learning and captures it as few in her style today.

While, on the contrary, in songs like “The Circle Of Five” or “Thrall”, we see the most sugary face of the girls and those classic influences that come to light and reflect very well in both pieces, perhaps in the middle of some songs already mentioned would gain more points in the final result but they are still two of the great moments of the album.

But if we have to name the best moment of the album that comes from the hand without a doubt of “Nine Woods”, a spectacular powerful heavy metal cut that combines the sound and classical harmonies but with a fairly modern production for this style of music. and the result of which is simply fantastic.

Surely it is not the best BW album to date but the reality is that the girls have managed to regain flight and come back with totally renewed airs to show us why they are one of the best European heavy metal formations in recent times, I repeat the album You have to give him his time but when you do I am convinced that he will end up conquering you and if not time then time.
