Reseña-Review: Can’t Swim “Someone Who Isn’t Me”

Los chicos de Can’t Swim sorprendieron a propios y extraños en 2019 con su EP ” Foreign Language” un disco cargado de melodías y paisajes que podían conquistar tanto a un fan de Real Friends como a uno de Boston Manor , si es que existe alguna diferencia entre el público de ambas bandas pese a su diferencia sonora.

Lo que menos esperábamos los que seguimos al grupo de New Jersey era que en su nuevo EP que salió a comienzos de diciembre , diesen un giro bastante notable a sus composiciones y nos presenten un conjunto de canciones cargadas de diferentes paisajes , texturas mucho menos “teen” y hasta pinceladas electrónicas que pueden sorprender y mucho al oyente.

Ya desde el comienzo con ” Someone Isn’t You” , la banda sorprende con un giro electrónico que coquetea con el EDM y el Dubstep pero que permite lucir instrumentos como el piano , vamos lo que hacía The Secret Handshake hace 12 años pero llevado al sonido de Can’t Swim , sin duda un gran y sorprendente comienzo.

En cambio en “Who’s Happy” , la banda suaviza los loops electrónicos para entregarnos un corte de pop rock muy a lo “The Postal Service” o lo que intentaron sin éxito Alex (All Time Low) y Mark Hoppus de Blink 182 con su proyecto Simple Creatures , Can’t Swim lo han conseguido y con mucho mejor resultado.

Las revoluciones bajan un poquito en “Casey” , quizás el mejor corte del disco y que te sitúa en una tarde de invierno frente al río y con un café calentito como paisaje y esta canción como banda sonora, es muy emotiva y de nuevo revolotean los paralelismos con bandas como SayWeCanFly o The Postal Service , pero con la suficiente convicción como para sonar a ellos mismos.

El EP se completa con la bailonga “Floor 71” que podría ser de los mismísimos The 1975 y a nadie le sorprendería y la final acústica “Tiny Hands” , muy en la onda emo acústica de nueva ola que puede arrancar más de una lágrima entre los seguidores si la tocan en directo cuando decidan girar en 2021.

Creo que estamos ante un trabajo muy interesante , lástima que sea tan breve porque te deja pensando ¿ Can’t Swim pueden ser el siguiente grupo de su generación en llegar a las grandes ligas? o esto es sólo un pasatiempo antes de grabar un disco completo y nos mostrarán incluso una cara nueva del grupo , el tiempo dirá mientras tanto acabamos el año con uno de los mejores EP’s de la temporada y que recomiendo de forma muy sincera que le des una oportunidad , dudo que te arrepientas si te gusta este tipo de grupos y estilos.

Right from the start with “Someone Isn’t You”, the band surprises with an electronic twist that flirts with EDM and Dubstep but allows us to show off instruments like the piano, let’s go what The Secret Handshake did 12 years ago but taken to Can’t Swim sound, certainly a great and surprising start.

On the other hand, in “Who’s Happy”, the band softens the electronic loops to give us a pop rock cut very much like “The Postal Service” or what Alex (All Time Low) and Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 tried without success with their project. Simple Creatures, Can’t Swim have done it and with much better results.

The revolutions go down a little bit in “Casey”, perhaps the best cut on the album and that places you on a winter afternoon in front of the river and with a warm coffee as the landscape and this song as the soundtrack, is very emotional and again fluttering the parallels with bands like SayWeCanFly or The Postal Service, but with enough conviction to sound like themselves.

The EP is completed with the dance “Floor 71” that could be from The 1975 themselves and no one would be surprised and the acoustic final “Tiny Hands”, very in the acoustic emo wave of a new wave that can draw more than a tear between the fans if they play it live when they decide to tour in 2021.

I think this is a very interesting job, too bad it’s so brief because it leaves you wondering, Can’t Swim be the next group of their generation to reach the big leagues? Or this is just a hobby before recording a complete album and they will even show us a new face of the group, time will tell in the meantime we end the year with one of the best EP’s of the season and I sincerely recommend that you give it one opportunity, I doubt you will regret it if you like these types of groups and styles.
