A veces sin siquiera saberlo, quizás necesites que salga un disco que rompa un poco con lo que venías escuchando y a veces también aún siendo familiar con el sonido del artista en cuestión no dejas de sorprenderte ante la inmensa capacidad que tiene para plasmar de forma tan notable lo que ha venido trabajando durante meses y meses.

Pues en el caso del conjunto de Houston(Texas), Oceans Of Slumber seguramente estemos ante un ejemplo perfecto de ambos casos y no es ninguna novedad ya que la banda es una de las formaciones más intensas, completas y perfeccionistas de los últimos años y con mucha diferencia.

Si bien la banda ya apuntaba maneras hace 7 años cuando lanzó su álbum debut que tuvo una respuesta más bien discreta y sólo hizo ruido entre los más curiosos e inconformistas, si es cierto que con la llegada de Cammie Gilbert, una de las mejores cantantes surgidas en el mundo del metal en la última década con diferencia, la banda empezó a hacer mucho más ruido y con la salida de su siguiente disco “Winter”, en 2016 la banda ya empezó a ganarse el respeto de público y prensa gracias a su fichaje por Century Media y a giras con pesos pesados como Enslaved o Ne Obliviscaris, quienes no dudaron en echar un cable a los chicos viendo el potencial que tenían.

Por eso tras dos años desde la salida de su último trabajo “The Banished Heart”, una exquisitez oscura y sombría al alcance de casi nadie que conquistó nuevamente a propios y extraños, la banda vuelve con su nuevo trabajo homónimo, para demostrar que seguramente lo más simple que tenga dentro sea el título del mismo.

Como es habitual estamos ante un disco cuya ambición es tan desmedida como necesaria pero a la vez bien ejecutada tal y como ocurre con los últimos discos de bandas como Infected Rain, Wage War, Beartooth o Jinjer, seguramente no suenen como Oceans Of Slumber, pero si que tenían esa garra y esa ambición por dar un paso más allá en su sonido que este disco también posee.

A la hora de analizar el disco también nos volvemos a encontrar con un trabajo que no merece la pena quizás dividirlo y analizar canción por canción, sino que el conjunto del mismo ya es lo suficientemente complejo e interesante como para hacer dicha división, además de que las canciones cuentan con el suficiente peso como para diferenciarse unas de otras.

Este disco no se puede tomar a la ligera ni buscando la canción de “fácil escucha” ni lo inmediato. No, este es un viaje o descenso a lo más profundo de tu interior que debes realizar de vuelta tú sólo e intentando descubrir los diferentes secretos que esconde el disco en cada escucha que te permitas darle y porque es necesario que lo hagas así? porque te darás cuenta de que Oceans han vuelto no sólo a editar un trabajo sublime y cuyo nivel de virtuosismo está a años luz del de la mayoría de sus contemporáneos sino que además estamos ante uno de los mejores discos de los últimos tres lustros como poco…

La banda ha volcado en el disco un sin fin de emociones y sonidos que vas a descubrir conforme te adentres en el mismo: Desde la densidad asfixiante pero necesaria del Doom Metal hasta técnisismos y elementos propios del death metal (que tan bien supieron plasmar bandas como Opeth por ejemplo) pasando por elementos característicos del gothic metal y a todo ello sumarle esos pasajes imperfectos pero complejos y bien cohesionados propios del Djent y el metal progresivo, lo mejor es que pese a todo ello , el disco te cautiva desde su primera escucha y sabes que a la siguiente descubrirás algún secreto que te pasó por alto la vez anterior y así será también con la siguiente vez que lo escuches.

Además de todo lo anteriormente mencionado que no es poco, Oceans Of Slumber vuelven a contar con un elemento clave en el disco que vuelve a lucirse como pocas y esta no es otra que Cammie Gilbert, su espectacular y única vocalista y líder absoluta de la banda , además de su sello de identidad.

Cammie vuelve a lucirse con su potente y abrumadora voz , a ratos desgarradora, a ratos heredera de aquellas grandes divas del soul, y a ratos una mezcla de ambos tonos tal y como ocurría con Skin, en la época dorada de Skunk Anansie, por ello ella brilla con luz propia en la escena metalera actual porque no hay nadie que cante como ella y tenga ese peso y poderío vocal que sólo ella tiene.

Por este mismo motivo es que el disco también destaca como una obra cási artística, porque el viaje que el mismo supone tiene como capitana principal a una de las mejores voces de su generación que es capacidad de abrumarte con unos tonos delicados pero sombríos como destrozarte los oídos con sus hermosos y brutales tonos guturales, sin que en ningún momento se pierda el sentido de la obra ni que sean gritos al uso y de forma precipitada y poco natural, no señores cada palabra emitida por la garganta de Cammie Gilbert en el disco tiene su razón y su motivo de peso para que la escuches con toda tu atención posible.

Por ello como habíamos comentado al principio el disco necesita su tiempo de maduración y de acostumbrarte a lo que estás escuchando, sus 70 minutos de duración acabarán por ganarte y por goleada ya que no hay nada, repito nada que nos pueda indicar que no estamos ante uno de los mejores y más completos álbumes de estos últimos 12 meses y con mucha diferencia.

Con lo cual si buscas la inmediatez y los temas de “usar y tirar”, esto no es lo tuyo, ahora bien si crees que eres capaz de abrir la mente y tomarte el tiempo necesario para enfrentarte a este disco, te recomiendo fervientemente que lo hagas porque como he dicho se trata de una obra compleja, intensa,oscura y sobre todo sublime.

Así es lo nuevo de Oceans Of Slumber cargado de virtudes y sin apenas defectos , estás listo para este nuevo viaje, seguramente de los mejores viajes musicales que vas a escuchar en mucho tiempo.

When it comes to analyzing the album, we also come across a work that is not worth dividing it and analyzing it song by song, but the whole of it is already complex and interesting enough to make this division, in addition to the songs have enough weight to differentiate themselves from each other.

This album cannot be taken lightly or looking for the song of “easy listening” or the immediate. No, this is a journey or descent to the depths of your interior that you must make back on your own and trying to discover the different secrets that the album hides in each listen that you allow yourself to give it and why is it necessary that you do so?, because you will realize that Oceans have returned not only to release a sublime work and whose level of virtuosity is light years away from that of most of their contemporaries, but we are also facing one of the best albums of the last three decades at least …

The band has put into the album an endless number of emotions and sounds that you will discover as you enter it: From the suffocating but necessary density of Doom Metal to technicalities and elements typical of death metal (which bands like Opeth knew so well how to capture. for example) going through characteristic elements of gothic metal and to all this add those imperfect but complex and well cohesive passages typical of Djent and progressive metal, the best thing is that despite all this, the album captivates you from its first listen and you know that the next time you will discover a secret that you overlooked the previous time and so it will be the next time you listen to it.

In addition to all the aforementioned, which is not little, Oceans Of Slumber once again has a key element in the album that once again shines like few others and this is none other than Cammie Gilbert, its spectacular and only vocalist and absolute leader of the band, in addition to your identity stamp.

Cammie once again shows off with her powerful and overwhelming voice, at times heartbreaking, at times heir to those great soul divas, and at times a mixture of both tones as it happened with Skin, in the golden age of Skunk Anansie, that’s why she shines with its own light in the current metal scene because there is no one who sings like her and has that weight and vocal power that only she has.

For this same reason, the album also stands out as a nearly artistic work, because the journey that it entails has as its main captain one of the best voices of his generation, who is capable of overwhelming you with delicate but somber tones, as well as destroying your ears with their beautiful and brutal guttural tones, without ever losing the meaning of the work or being shouts to use and in a hasty and unnatural way, no gentlemen, every word emitted by Cammie Gilbert’s throat on the album has her reason and her compelling motive so that you listen to her with all your possible attention.

For this reason, as we had commented at the beginning, the album needs its time to mature and to get used to what you are listening to, its 70 minutes of duration will end up winning you and a landslide since there is nothing, I repeat nothing that can indicate that we are not facing one of the best and most complete albums of the last 12 months and by far.

With which if you are looking for immediacy and “use and throw” themes, this is not your thing, now if you think you are capable of opening your mind and taking the time necessary to face this album, I strongly recommend that you do so. do because as I have said it is a complex, intense, dark and above all sublime work.
